The people of Israel mark two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations continue
People have assembled across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The incident saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast on Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A senior delegate knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an evening round of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the morning session concluded without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the differences between the both parties.
Critical Points in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future administration of the territory
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place appears as home any longer and until each abducted person come back no one will be secure."
"Once we see all home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel reports 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise required for the abducted to return. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens prefer the war to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.
From there, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"When the night comes, the fear appears with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, described.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had received the corpses of several people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city indicated two more victims had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south, medical staff stated.
