The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
