Texas Top Legal Officer Files Lawsuit Against Acetaminophen Producers Over Autism Allegations

Judicial Case
Ken Paxton, a Trump ally who is running for US Senate, accused the drug companies of hiding safety concerns of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the manufacturers of Tylenol, alleging the corporations concealed alleged dangers that the pain reliever posed to children's neurological development.

The lawsuit comes a month after Donald Trump publicized an unverified association between taking Tylenol - also known as acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder in children.

The attorney general is taking legal action against the pharmaceutical giant, which once produced the drug, the only pain reliever approved for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a official comment, he stated they "deceived the public by gaining financially from suffering and marketing drugs regardless of the potential hazards."

The manufacturer asserts there is insufficient reliable data tying Tylenol to autism.

"These corporations deceived for years, deliberately risking millions to line their pockets," Paxton, a Republican, stated.

The manufacturer stated officially that it was "deeply concerned by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the safety of acetaminophen and the likely effects that could have on the health of US mothers and children."

On its online platform, the company also mentioned it had "consistently assessed the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that shows a verified association between using paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder."

Organizations representing doctors and medical practitioners share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has stated paracetamol - the main ingredient in Tylenol - is among limited choices for women during pregnancy to treat pain and elevated temperature, which can pose major wellness concerns if left untreated.

"In more than two decades of research on the utilization of paracetamol in pregnancy, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the usage of paracetamol in any period of pregnancy results in neurological conditions in children," the organization said.

The court filing references latest statements from the former administration in arguing the medication is potentially dangerous.

Recently, Trump raised alarms from public health officials when he instructed expectant mothers to "fight like hell" not to take Tylenol when unwell.

The US Food and Drug Administration then issued a notice that physicians should consider limiting the usage of Tylenol, while also declaring that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism in children has remains unverified.

The Health Department head Kennedy, who oversees the FDA, had pledged in spring to initiate "extensive scientific investigation" that would identify the origin of autism in a matter of months.

But authorities advised that discovering a single cause of autism - thought by researchers to be the consequence of a complicated interplay of genetic and surrounding conditions - would not be simple.

Autism spectrum disorder is a form of enduring cognitive variation and disability that affects how individuals encounter and interact with the world, and is identified using doctors' observations.

In his lawsuit, Paxton - who supports Trump who is campaigning for federal office - claims Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "intentionally overlooked and sought to suppress the science" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The case seeks to make the corporations "destroy any promotional materials" that asserts acetaminophen is safe for expectant mothers.

This legal action parallels the complaints of a group of parents of minors with autism and ADHD who sued the producers of Tylenol in two years ago.

The court threw out the case, stating investigations from the plaintiffs' authorities was lacking definitive proof.
