Senegal's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back home,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to victory and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
