The direst projected effects of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by scientists, including a blistering 4C rise in mean temperatures to a two-metre surge in ocean levels. An alternative projection foresees a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt food production and energy needs.
Possible Events, Not Predictions
These impacts, certain ones are linked to climate tipping points, are viewed as low probability but plausible. The team explained that these scenarios filled a gap in risk assessment that had rendered the UK unprepared for extreme outcomes.
"The severe weather events we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are plausible," said Nigel Arnell who directed the research. "Britain has been formulating policy without the frameworks to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to get ready for future conditions they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."
A Suite of Harsh Climate Scenarios
A further series of severe models maps the potential extent of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that temperatures could soar in certain periods by up to 6C above average, while rainfall could be triple normal levels.
The chance of the catastrophic events happening cannot be precisely determined due to uncertainty about what measures will be enacted to combat climate change and how the Earth's systems will behave. This research was compared to defence planning or stress tests for economic stability.

- Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if climate action fails or if strong feedback loops like the Amazon rainforest perishing emit its huge repository of carbon. This would lead to severe and lengthy heat domes and water shortages affecting the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A critical sea current, the North Atlantic current, is losing strength and losing stability due to climate change. A complete failure starting around 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Agriculture would face immense difficulties and freshwater availability would be drastically changed," said the professor.

The project was commissioned as part of a official climate resilience programme. Previous assessments have cautioned that not enough attention was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
The government's climate advisors has said that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and assess the risks for 4C. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "insufficient" by environmental groups.
