Generational marksman Erling Haaland secures a crack at his initial international competition next summer, after leading Norway to the World Cup.

And the 25-year-old Manchester City striker did it in remarkable fashion, scoring 16 goals in eight World Cup qualifying matches - finding the back of the net consistently in each of those matches.

That makes him the highest scorer in 2026 World Cup qualifying in every region.

And his country's 4-1 win against Italy on Sunday, featuring a Haaland brace, guarantees they'll be participating in next summer's World Cup in the American continent.

Haaland, speaking following the match: "I'm delighted, but more relieved. There's considerable expectation and things, and I sense it. But it's enjoyable."

This marks merely their fourth World Cup, and their premier global event since the 2000 Euros.

The Crucial Role Did Haaland Play?

Haaland's goalscoring record for Norway is nothing short of phenomenal.

He has registered 55 goals in 48 matches for the national team.

Additionally he is only the sixth player ever, and the initial one in over five decades, to register 50 finishes in under 50 international games.

Norway's previous highest scorer was Juve with 33 strikes, who kept that distinction for almost a century.

Throughout these preliminary games he netted 16 strikes - in eight games - plus two setup passes.

This represents twice the goals tally anyone else has netted in UEFA matches.

He is the highest scorer in these qualifying matches in any continent, including areas where squads compete twice as more games.

More than twelve months has gone by since Haaland most recently didn't net in a game for Norway.

Team Effort Complementing Haaland

But it is not only about Haaland.

Team leader Martin Odegaard, 26, has greater goal contributions than any other player in European preliminary matches - seven assists.

The Gunners playmaker has played 67 times for Norway since making his debut at the age of 15.

"Combine Haaland's success with the fact that in this period we furthermore feature Martin Odegaard," said a Norwegian journalist.

Historical Significance of Successful Qualification

Erling's dad, Alf Inge Haaland, featured in the 1994 competition.

Haaland's participation in the upcoming World Cup with Norway ensures he escapes his addition to the roster of legendary footballers who never featured in one.

George Weah, who secured titles with multiple European clubs, played for Liberia - who have never reached a World Cup.

Legendary Red Devils attacker the footballing genius, considered by many as among the best ever, was a Northern Irish representative during the sixties and seventies when they did not qualify.
