Milei Statuette, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing unneeded offerings can be considered slightly impolite – unless it's done for a noble purpose.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures while abroad. The diverse haul could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Italian art dealer. The specific date is yet to be set, although the aim is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with the proceeds donated to non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The items reportedly locked away in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been sitting unused for years.

A complete inventory is yet to be made public, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was presented in parliament. The discussion focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being followed. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

A Global Assortment of Presents

Notable gifts feature:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," observers have said.

Diplomatic Context

The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her allies, with building relationships with foreign leaders and making Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.

The forthcoming sale highlights a novel approach to manage the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a leader's tenure.
