Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
He remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and look forward tracking their development".
The prominent academic, who formerly presided over Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public emails revealed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the technology organization said it accepted Summers' determination to depart.
"We value his many contributions and the insight he provided to the governing body," the organization stated.
Congressional Action
This news comes after both chambers of the US legislature voted on recently to pass a measure that would require the Department of Justice to release its records on the case.
The bill will then head to the office of the White House for endorsement. He has indicated he expects to approve the legislation, after modifying his view on the issue following pressure from his supporters.
Message Details
A collection of Epstein-connected emails made public by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications showed that the professor and the financier dined together frequently, with he often attempting to introduce the academic to prominent world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were made available with the wider community, the former official stated he accepted "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to restore faith and repair relationships with the individuals closest to me".
Career Background
The professor served in high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He led the institution from five years and remains a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public roles earlier on Monday, he stated he would continue his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal policy institute in the capital where he was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was not affiliated with the institution.
He became part of the leadership of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
