A trio of officers perished and at least 15 others got wounded in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.
Sequence of Events
The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
The three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
A man and a woman were arrested at the location and another man who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended soon after. The trio have been transported to hospital.
The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location displayed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.
Financial Context
The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the residence was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member caused the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed reporters.
A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister said.
Casualties and Damage
Injured individuals by the incident comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.
According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
The official was convinced the blast had taken place on a level above the doorway and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the incident, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told local news, mentioning that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
