Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.
Career Highlights
Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a emerging lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a difficult season, placing last in the American League Central but showing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.
A two-time Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, surpassing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's coveted Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was shortened to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Even with fanning often, he still managed .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in 892 games. He started playing mainly at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.
WBC Heroics
Murakami's heroics were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending two-base hit that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a come-from-behind 6-5 win. The very next day in the final against the United States, he hit a game-tying home run in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.
The power hitter is slated to be formally introduced at a media availability on the coming Monday.
