Cameroon Political Opposition Figure Confronts Legal Proceedings Regarding Electoral Turmoil, Government Declares

Election Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon express anger over the fact that the president has won an eighth term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has announced that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over claims that he instigated "violent post-election demonstrations".

No fewer than four demonstrators have been lost their lives during confrontations between police and military and demonstrators since Cameroon's election on October 12, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth consecutive term.

Issa Tchiroma insists that he was the true winner, a claim rejected by the incumbent party, the ruling CPDM.

Aggressive responses by security personnel on demonstrators have concerned the international community, with the UN, AU and EU demanding moderation.

Minister's Accusations

Recently, Nji charged the opposition figure of organising what he referred to as "unauthorized" rallies leading to the fatalities, and also criticised him for claiming win in the presidential race.

He added that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators involved in an insurrectionary plan" will also face legal action.

Poll Figures

The president, who came to power in 1982 and is now the most elderly national leader, obtained the October 12 vote with 53.7% of the ballots, compared to just over a third for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.

Opposition Response

Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the authorities' move to bring him to court, but he had previously declared that he refused to acknowledge a stolen vote - and that he was not afraid of being arrested.

On election result day, he reported that gunmen shot on protesters assembled near his home in the city of Garoua, causing the death of at least two individuals.

Inquiry Revealed

Earlier this week, the government official revealed that an probe would be launched into unrest prior to and following the publication of the election results.

"Throughout the violence, some of the criminals lost their lives," he said, without offering a specific number of demonstrators who have been lost their lives in the clashes.

The minister added that several officers of the security forces also sustained serious injuries.

Present Conditions

Although the interior minister insisted the situation throughout Cameroon was now stable, protesters continue to protest in various areas of the country, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators established obstructions on Tuesday, and ignited rubber on the streets.

Experts alert that the political turmoil could lead the country into a governmental instability.
