Bluefin Fish Commands Unprecedented Price of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital Auction
A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.
The winning bid for the 535-pound fish was placed by the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates restaurants throughout Japan and internationally.
"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the company president, a familiar participant at the traditional January sale.
Known as the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is famous for making substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past
After the auction, the winner informed the press that he was "astonished at the final price," stating, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price soared rapidly."
This latest purchase tops his own record purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite previously remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to break his own record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another food company, which indicated the fish would be featured at its restaurants throughout the country.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly processed for diners at the bidder's sushi establishments immediately after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've begun the year in a good way after consuming something so auspicious as the year gets underway," said one satisfied customer.
